Carri Summers ’00 moved to New York City following her graduation to intern for a famous fashion designer.  While she loves fashion, her dream was to write her own novel.  She has always been an avid reader throughout her life.  Carri took ideas that she got from past book and things that have happened in her life and wrote her first novel.  Alter Ego in Chanel as the book is titled and is currently available on Amazon/Kindle.  I sat down with Carri to ask her a few questions.

What about your Lynn education helped you get where you are today?
I feel that my overall education contributed to writing. The marketing classes in particular were super beneficial with how I am going about getting my book out there at this point in time. Additionally, the fashion program allowed me the knowledge and opportunity to get myself to NYC after graduation to work for a famous designer which I plan to tell about in my next novel.

Were there particular faculty members who had an impact on you? How?
Yes indeed, one of the professors that comes to mind was Dr. Snyder, he was great & I learned so much about business from him. Also, Donna Sullivan who was in charge of the fashion program because her classes were the most fun! ☺

How did Lynn meet your particular educational needs?
It provided me with a great education, lifelong friends and resources to help further my career. In regards to education in particular, I feel as though it was an exemplary school for teaching me how to move ahead in life.

What words of advice would you give to a LU student today?
I would advise them to take full advantage of the opportunities that come along with an education from such a prestigious school and never give up on their dreams because I am living mine now.

Can you provide a brief overview of your activities/accomplishments since graduation?
After graduation, I spent a summer interning for designer Anna Sui in New York City. While in the city, I continued to network and got myself hooked up with a PR company that handled Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and became a volunteer for the Nanette Lepore fashion show. Upon returning home, I helped run a successful business for five years and have now published my first novel. Finally, I am planning my wedding for March 2012.

Do you keep in contact with any alumni, students or professors from your time here at Lynn University?
Absolutely, I have many friends that I am still in touch with that I hope will remain a part of my life forever.

How did you come up with the idea for the book?
Being an avid reader, I had many ideas that I played with and knew that I wanted to write a novel in the “chick lit” genre because that’s what I enjoy reading. I then incorporated stories from people around me and exaggerated them to make it more entertaining. I had enough knowledge in the fashion and entertainment industries to keep it fun.
