Alum hosts event to raise money for LU Haiti Crisis Fund

The Lynn University Haiti Crisis Fund is set to receive a donation of 50 percent of total sales from the Boston, Mass.-based restaurant, Taranta, on Feb. 1.

Chef-owner and Lynn alum, Jose Duarte ’94, ’98 (Hospitality Management), explains, “After seeing the devastation and suffering the earthquake caused, I wanted to respond positively. I have interacted and worked with many Haitian communities, and so I want to help in a way I feel I can. I have a tie with my alma mater; it felt right to contribute towards this fund.”

While at LU, Duarte managed the Snack Bar and catered events in South Florida. He balanced the commitments of academics with an internship under the direction of chef-owner Marco Pindo of Ristorante Sapori in Boca Raton.

Duarte opened Taranta in the historic North End of Boston in 2000.
In 2007 he began his research on sustainability and carbon reduction as a way of reducing costs, offsetting an average of 80 metric tons per year, certifying Taranta as one of the few green restaurants in the world
