As the preferred maintenance provider for several of South Florida's most prestigious institutions, Dirt Pros provides pristine and healthy environments in the education, commercial real estate, hospitality,
healthcare, retail and public venue industries. Focused on providing heightened “green” services, Dirt Pros engrains environmentally friendly chemicals and practices in every piece of the process to benefit both the health and welfare of their employees and the general public at large.
Heywood got the idea for Dirt Pros back in 2003, while still in school. Playing for Florida State, before a game against Georgia Tech, he met a gentleman who had just sold a janitorial business for $6 million. As he sat there icing his elbow, He knew he wasn't going to play basketball forever. Starting a business like his seemed like the way to go. On the court, he was a point guard. His job was to facilitate and distribute and get everyone involved. He continues to use those same skills now as a CEO. He sees his responsibility as giving the people the resources they need to be successful and then get out of the way.
Dirt Pros made the decision to switch to using only environmentally friendly chemicals and products, because they didn't want their employees exposed to anything that would harm them. They stopped using bleach, for example, because it causes upper respiratory problems. It cost a great deal to make the switch, and they got pushback from some of their customers. But they felt it was the right thing to do, and it has paid off since.
One of Dirt Pro’s missions as a company is to create 1,000 quality jobs in South Florida. Part of that is doing their best to engage their employees as much as possible. Their turnover rate is one-third of what is typical in the industry.
