In 1987, after qualifying with a degree in Engineering, Derek founded Ixchange - a software company serving the securities industry.

As CEO and post a merger in 1996, Derek co-founded FrontRange Limited which he led to an IPO in 1997. FrontRange Ltd. grew from 30 to over 1,000 employees operating globally across 6 continents, completing over 10 company acquisitions. FrontRange in North America is the owner of the Goldmine CRM and Heat Help Desk software solutions. Resigning as CEO of FrontRange Ltd. to found CodeCapital in 2001, Derek remained active on the Board of Directors until 2006 when FrontRange Ltd. was sold to Francisco Partners for $200 million.
