There are three types of baseball players...

There are three types of baseball players; those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happens. Tommy Kahnle ’10 took the mound for the Colorado Rockies on Thursday afternoon to become the first player in Lynn University history to play in a MLB game. We can now categorize Tommy under the group of baseball players who make it happen.

Yesterday was a beautiful day in South Florida to make your MLB debut. With a runner on third and one out, Tommy threw his first major league pitch against the Miami Marlins. Both coach Rudy Garbalosa and I would agree that it was quite fitting for him to debut in South Florida where he established himself as a major league prospect. After one and two-thirds innings, Tommy earned his first career hold and even got his first major league strikeout sending Marlins’ Reed Johnson swinging to the bench. After Tommy stepped off the mound for the day, the Rockies would go on to lose 8-5 to the Marlins.  One thing is sure though, Tommy did his job.

Tommy was just as much of a star, if not more, here at Lynn as he is today. Now every school in the Sunshine State Conference is claiming them as their own and boasting about the former SSC player hitting the big leagues. Here at Lynn, he is our star. During his career at Lynn was a part of the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship baseball team and even became a member of the no hitter club. Though Tommy has been a rising star since he was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 2010 MLB amateur draft in the fifth round, 175th overall, he still remains humble. Tommy is still very tied to Lynn and is known to come back for alumni games and practice with the Lynn team in the off seasons. Be sure to follow the Tommy and the Rockies throughout the 2014 season.
