Making the transition from a European Country to the United States was an extremely big step for Leonidas Oikonomidis ’15. He mentioned that, “Family is really far away and the culture is totally different here.” Even so, he was very excited about the opportunity to study in Boca Raton, Florida. “Lynn has the perfect location. Amazing weather, great beaches, a lot of surfing and water activities,” he mentioned. “Something amazing about Lynn is how many different cultures you can find in a school. I made friends from all over the world, traveled with them and discovered new countries. In my personal opinion, that is the best education.”

The Hospitality program at Lynn caught Leo’s interest. “Hospitality is something that I really like. Being able to provide service and make someone feel at home in a place they visited always exited me,” said Leo. The management school at Lynn prepared Leo for the job he would have after graduation. He took courses that focused on customer service, hospitality accounting and finance. Those classes were the key focus on skills needed in this field.

Before graduating with his degree in Hospitality Management, Leo completed an internship with Lynn at the Winter X Games. “This was a great step before getting ready for the real life experience,” he said. While working at different jobs, Leo realized, “Every job is different, every company is looking for something unique.”
Leo currently works at the Standard Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. He is the Front Office Supervisor. “My daily tasks are to ensure the quality of service and meet the customers’ expectations, manage day to day operations and financial activities such as setting budgets controlling expenses and maximizing revenue,” Leo mentioned. He works in a position where every day is different. There are moments when clients are high maintenance and come with high expectations. That challenge, though, is what makes Leo’s job amazing. “This place is always fun for the reason that you never know what’s going to happen.”

Leo is looking forward to growing with the company that he is currently with. The Standard has several new locations opening up in the future. If you’re going to Miami for the weekend, check out The Standard and check in: http://www.standardhotels.com/miami/properties/miami-beach
